Communication in Contemporary Organizations

Before dealing communication in organization or contemporary organization, it is better to deal on what communication is.

 

[Contemporary Communication in Organization]

Communication is the exchange of message from one person to another. There must be sender and receiver for the communication to take place. In between the sender and receiver there is the message which is transfer from sender to receiver.

The latine word communicare = communication. It means to inform, participate, share or to make common.


Let's see some of the definition of communication.

Some definitions of Communication are:

1. It is the process of exchanging information and understanding from one person to another [Keith Davis].

3. Communication is a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a  common system of symbols (Nepali, English, French)and sigh behavior (Facial & Body Movement) [Webster's Dictionary].

Communication is the life blood of the business.

The importance of communication rely on that without it No business can be developed and promoted.

Communication is the plaster that holds an organization together, whatever its business or its size.

 

Communication Theory

Communication is a theory and also a practice. In this regard, it is important to observe what communication theory is.

Communication Theory refers to the entire beliefs, ideas, process, principles, model, features and types related to communication.

Communication in contemporary organization simply refers to the business communication.

Business communication refers to all messages that we send and receive for various purposes  such as the official purpose like running, managing, and conducting the formal affairs of a voluntary organization etc. automatically falls under business communication.

BC is marked or identified by formality as against personal and social communication.

Communication in contemporary organization refers to the communication that takes place in the organization in present context. It is also called the organizational communication that refers to the process by which activities of an organizations are arranged and coordinated to reach the goals of both individuals and the organization.

Organizational communication helps business person from several ways

1) By providing specific roles and responsibilities of sales, services, and production;

2) It helps to acclimate the changes through individual and organizational creativity and adaptation;

3) It supports to complete tasks through the maintenance of policy, procedures, or regulations that support daily and continuous operations;

In a very simple word communication in contemporary organization refers to the information flow that happens in an organization which has the specific structure, direction and process.

Communication in contemporary organization circulates and takes place in a two major ways/types:

Normally, messages flow into over and out of business organizations in a variety of ways.

Such as:

Type 1 [Internal and External]

When we talk about the communication nature and type in any contemporary organization, they are of two types:

Internal communication

As the name suggests, the internal communication refers to the flow of information from one person to another inside the organization. Or it means the communication which is always within the organization or company between and among the people

For example, internal discussion, meeting, seminar and instruction

External communication

External here means the communication that flows from one organization to another or to the costumer. Thus, such type of communication takes place between a company and outside parties.

Type 2 [Formal and Informal]

Formal Communication network

Formal communication indicates the typical business or organizational communication because we communicate formally in an organization in the majority of the cases. You can also say almost always. This formal communication network is also divided into two types:

Downward communication

It is from top to bottom especially while launching the policy from the managerial board and executive board.

Upward communication

It is bottom to top that is useful when an institution tries to solve a particular problem or challenges.

Informal Communication network

It is the supplement or complementary to the formal communication network. We often talk and discuss the official problems and issue in inform setting. It may be in canteen, shopping center or home to find out the solution in the problem in one hand and on the other it gives the clue to the managerial level to address that unsolved problem.

The importance of communication in the contemporary organizations are listed as follows:

Motivation is promoted by informing and clarifying the employees about the task to be done, the manner, and how to improve their performance for the better results.

It plays a crucial role in altering individual’s attitudes, if it is needed for the expected progress of the organization.

Every business organization today attempts to develop their social attachment and socialization in this context communication helps in socializing. One cannot survive without communication.

Communication also assists in controlling process. It helps monitoring managerial member’s behavior in various ways.

Last but not the least, Communication adds meaning to human life, helps to build relationship and fosters love and understanding and enriches our knowledge of the universe and makes living worthwhile.
